Sustainability and Environmental Impact

APA holds current Native Title agreements with five Traditional Owner groups along this pipeline and maintains strong relationships and dialogue with them all. During the development of this project, these groups were instrumental, carrying out heritage monitors and land surveys to assist with planning processes.

Minimising the impact on heritage areas and land was always a top priority with this project. During the development phase, some threatened ecological areas were discovered that needed to be protected. By rerouting the path or drilling below ground to reduce any negative environmental impact, we ensured we could protect the delicate ecosystem.

The NGI project supported the Midwest Environmental and Land Management program with the Meekatharra Rangelands Biosecurity Association and the Murchison Regional Vermin Cell. This program focuses on the management of feral animals (including wild dogs) through fencing and the employment of two part-time Doggers.

The NGI project established a partnership with the Midwest Aboriginal Ranger Program, to provide new, sustainable career opportunities for Indigenous people from the region. Rangers undertake a range of on country activities, including fire and weed management; feral pest control; native flora and fauna monitoring and management; and documenting and protecting culturally significant sites.

Along its 579 km route in WA’s west to the east, the NGI project team asked local residents what mattered to them and where they could use some extra help. From the opportunities identified, APA’s NGI Project was able to support a range of initiatives, including:

  • A boxing program for disadvantaged youth
  • A local Australian Football League’s Indigenous Round
  • An ‘astrofest’ evening with displays and night sky tours
  • Kalgoorlie School of the Air
  • Edmund Rice Camps for Kids WA
  • A native wildlife rescue and rehabilitation park

The following standard services are offered on the NGI, subject to available capacity:

  • Firm transport.
  • Interruptible transport.
  • In pipe trade

A description of these services, including the Standard Gas Transportation Agreement (SGTA) can be found on the gas transmission services page.

Non-standard services or alternative terms may be available by negotiation.

Notes on services
Firm services are available over varying terms as set out on the gas transmission services page.

Interruptible services are only available while the pipeline is fully contracted in respect of the corresponding firm service.

APA is progressively rolling out In pipe trade service capability on all key pipelines. APA will prioritise this service rollout in accordance with shipper demand.

Potential customers do not have to submit a Formal Access Request to gain access to an APA pipeline. If you are interested in acquiring services for this pipeline, you can contact us at the contact details above to discuss your requirements.

For APA's non-scheme pipelines, you have a right to make a Formal Access Request pursuant to Rule 559 of the National Gas Rules. Lodging a Formal Access Request triggers a formal process of Access Offer and information exchange between APA and the potential customer.

You can make a Formal Access Request by completing in full the relevant User Access Request Form for the BWP and emailing it to useraccessrequest@apa.com.au.

Environmental Land and Heritage Approvals

Land access

APA has applied for an easement to contain the pipeline. An easement is an agreement registered on the title of the land that sets out the rights of a pipeline owner to install and maintain the pipeline and also outlines the requirements of the landowner in the affected area of the easement.

Approvals process

This project is subject to a comprehensive program of regulatory approvals, and landowner and community consultation, which has been assisting APA in finalising the pipeline alignment and managing and mitigating any identified impacts.

APA will prepare an Environmental Management Plan that demonstrates how APA will manage any potential environmental impacts resulting from the project. APA will work closely with relevant authorities to gain all necessary approvals for the pipeline development. These include approvals for heritage, environment, licencing, construction, commissioning, and ongoing operations and maintenance.
