Parmelia Gas Pipeline
The Parmelia Gas Pipeline (PGP) was Western Australia’s first transmission pipeline, completed in 1971.
The PGP has a mix of network, retail, electricity generation, as well as oil and aluminium refinery customers in the Perth area and the south west of Western Australia.
The 416 km (mainline) Parmelia Gas Pipeline (PGP) transports gas from the Perth Basin gas fields near Dongara (south of Geraldton), and APA’s Mondarra Gas Storage Facility, to end-users in the Perth area.
The 1.4 km Kwinana Supply Lateral, built in 2002, delivers gas to customers in the Kwinana industrial area south of Perth.
The PGP comprises a 416 km mainline and several laterals.
The mainline PGP interconnects with the ATCO Gas distribution network in the Perth metropolitan area.
Various other single user gas laterals also connect to the PGP, including the Westlime Lateral, Chandala Lateral, Bullsbrook (Rocla) Lateral, Canningvale Lateral and Hismelt Lateral.
As WA’s first transmission pipeline, it was granted Pipeline Licence #1, and was originally known as the Western Australian Natural Gas (WANG) Pipeline.
The mainline PGP has a natural gas haul capacity of 68 TJ/d. An upgrade has been made to the northern section to make it bi-directional flow.
The PGP and interconnected laterals are non-scheme pipelines.
The Kwinana Supply Lateral has been granted a category 3 exemption (average throughput less than 10TJ/day) from aspects of Part 23 information disclosure.
The other laterals have been granted category 2 exemptions (single user pipelines) under Part 23 of the National Gas Rules.
APA’s commitment to innovation and the energy transition has seen some remarkable milestones passed, including being at the forefront of innovation in green hydrogen.
In 2023 APA successfully completed a test with the PGP to transport 100% hydrogen along a 43 km section of the Parmelia Gas Pipeline. This research was partly funded by the WA Government’s Renewable Hydrogen Fund.
